u THROMBOLYSIS
INTRACRANIAL HEMORRHAGE COMPLICATION
Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) is an uncommon but serious
complication of thrombolitic therapy.
The GUSTO-1 trial provides the opportunity to analyze symptomatic ICH complicating
systemic intravenous thrombolysis for acute myocardial infarction.
CT scans from 244 patients were reviewed.
Thrombolysis-related coagulopathy and age appear to be the most important factors in the
genesis of postthrombolytic ICH.

u HEMODILUTION
THE MULTICENTER AUSTRIAN HEMODILUTION
STROKE TRIAL (MAHST)
MAHST is a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled
study of hypervolemic hemodilution within 6 hours of a first ischemic stroke localized in
the middle cerebral territory.
The treatment consists of 10% hydroxyethyl starch 200/0.5 (HES), tested against pure
rehydration with Ringers lactate over a period of 5 days.
Experimental studies have shown hemodilution to increase cerebral blood flow in areas of
ischemic brain.
MAHST failed to demonstrate a significant clinical benefit.
